CHEAT your way through Potty Training

Do you know how to CHEAT your way to potty training success with your pup?

For all the parents out there, do you remember potty training, or toilet training, your child? It wasn't easy. There were a lot of parts that needed to be accomplished. Your child had to recognize the urge, control her bladder, know where it was appropriate to go, alert you, have the drive to go in the new spot instead of the easier, familiar spot, and so much more!

Puppies need to learn the same basic pieces. They need to learn the appropriate place, be convinced to go there instead of the easier, more familiar floor, hold their bladder/bowels, alert you, etc. See the parallels? 

I have come up with 5 pillars to potty training and a 3 stage plan that you can master.
Let me share the questions you need to start thinking about if you are going to have any success with potty training and then we can get into learning the 3 stage process

Here are some questions to consider:

1. What is your dog's cue to you that he needs to eliminate?
2. How can you build on that cue to make it less subtle and more clear to the human side?
3. What is the cue you want your dog to learn to eliminate outside?
4. Is your treat timing becoming a cue to partially eliminate?

1. Does he eat meals or is he fed/treated throughout the day?
2. Does he drink a lot at once or just take a few sips at a time?
3. What is your habit when you are outside?
4. Do you go back inside immediately after elimination?
5. How often do you take him out?
6. Does he have a habit of eliminating in the same place every time or does he avoid the same spot?
7. Do you go outside with him?

1. How have you set up the environment?
2. Is he limited only to space where you can physically see him?
3. How have you cleaned up accidents in the past?
4. Do you have your shoes, leash, and treats set up next to the door so you can grab them and run out if needed?

---

1. What immediate action are you taking if you catch him in the act?
2. What immediate action are you taking if you discover a previous accident?
3. What action are you taking when he eliminates outside?
4. If he has an accident, what action are you taking to prevent that in the future?

---

1. Are you aware of the general elimination time interval for your pup's age?
2. Once he has learned how to cue you and won't eliminate in front of you, are you pushing him to wait a little longer?
3. Are you aware of how often he needs to eliminate?
4. Do you know how soon after eating, he needs to eliminate?
5. Are you allowing yourself some time and space to see progress?
