What do Lego bricks have to do with dog training?
You can take a big behavior that you want to work on and pretend like it's a Lego creation. Within your giant Lego creation, you can take this really big behavior and if you just teach the little pieces, you're soon able to put that big behavior back together again. It's really solid because it has a really nice foundation to it.
Let's look at the "Come when Called" Behavior...
Our expectation is to be able to call our dog away from something he's doing, something distracting, right? Well, if you break that behavior down, it's pretty big!
So if we want our dog performing this enormous behavior,
we need to make sure he can perform all those individual behaviors that make up the big one. The recall is one example. When I taught these pieces in my Rock the Recall Challenge in the Academy, the pet parents didn't even realize what a massive difference teaching each small behavior was making to the overall picture. It's just one of those things that we can overcomplicate when we insist on the big behavior without taking the time to mentally break it down into the little pieces
If you're not sure how to break it down or need extra support in making progress, don't hesitate to reach out or consider joining the academy.
Next up, we're breaking down JUMPING!
